Dolphins, Boats, Coffee and Art

Benjamin & I had a morning out today so Tori & Jacob could sleep. The success of that, or more accurately lack of success is not my place to comment on.

Anyway, Benjamin & I drove the 5 minutes into Tauranga & parked at the top of the hill. We took our time wandering down the streets, looking in shops, buying new sunglasses, asking about airfares to America, just the usual things I do.

We stopped at Starbucks for a QUAD shot Venti flat white & strolled over to the harbour to have our coffee, water for Bug, and our shapes. We were sitting down by the floating restaurant when a pod of dolphins came into the harbour! One little boys' eyes were as big as saucers. The dolphins were there for a good 10 minutes playing, jumping, just the usual dolphin stuff I guess.

After we talked about the dolphins, watched the boats, helicopters and people we wandered along The Strand & headed towards the library.

We stopped at the Art Gallery & just called in. All the displays were "DON'T TOUCH", not the best place for a 2 year old. The center piece at the moment is a display called "BIG RED" & it's an interactive piece... Just what we needed. Basically it's a whole bunch of red plastic strips hanging down from the ceiling that you walk through. It's better than it sounds, honest. It's pitch black as your walk the first 15 feet into it, then there is a small clearing in the middle of it that has a couple of lights hanging down. Benjamin loved it, he was able to tell me what it felt like against his face & arms, what colour it was, that sort of stuff. This is the link to what we saw & a proper description of it..not my half arsed attempt.

Made it to the library, checked out a pile of Lynley Dodd books & started to stroll back to find my truck. It was about this stage that Benjamin decided that his feet hurt, so in the middle of a busy footpath, he sat down & took his sandals off. I don't care what comments people make as they walk past. I'm big enough & grumpy enough to make most people think twice before they say something. Then if they are still foolish enough to make a comment regarding the way I've dressed my son, or what he says, then they had better be prepared for a response. Just because you're in a mobility scooter does make you right. You're old, he isn't.

It's been a good morning, the best part about it has been the cost. The $5.70 for my coffee was the expensive part. You can call me cheap if you want, but it was worth it. This sounds like it was a highly organised outing. It wasn't! We left so Tori & the gremlin could have some quite time. The intention was to aimlessly wander about for a few hours, and in that regard, we won.

He is knackered & sound asleep. This afternoon??? Hmmm, a spot of cloud watching on the grass maybe?
